Hafting a Sagaie Point (Paleolithic osseous dart point)
In this video I haft a sagaie point, a Paleolithic European point type fashioned on an osseous rod. There are numerous variations on these points, and foreshafts of antler have been recovered as well. This is only my interpretation of the method, and may not 100% accurate to the originals.
My point is cattle bone, which is inferior to reindeer antler for durability, but more easily obtained by city-dwellers in the Holocene epoch.

Atlatl Combat Experiments: Fending with Sticks
Просмотров 5714 года назад
Another part of the atlatl combat experiments conducted by myself and Devin Pettigrew (Aratlatl on RUclips and Instagram). These experiments test the use of Basketmaker II S-shaped sticks (Also called fending sticks or grooved clubs) to defend against atlatl darts. This research became a poster, given at the 2015 Plains Conference, Iowa City. A publication is currently in the works. This sort o...
Atlatl Combat Experiments: Duels with Shields

In this video, Devin Pettigrew (Aratlatl on RUclips and Instagram) and I participate in some atlatl duels with Basketmaker II style gear. This was part of a larger set of experiments we conducted, in which we tested a range of combat scenarios. We wrote up part of this research in an article, Experiments with Basketmaker II Atlatls as Combat Weapons, which ran in The Missouri Archaeologist (201...

Peeling Willow with a Willow Brake

A video demonstrating how to strip willow bark using a tool called a willow brake. This makes stripping dart shafts quick and easy, even when the bark isn't slipping. If isn't peeling well, stand the shoots in a bucket of water for a few days to rehydrate the bark to help it to peel.
"Basketmakeresque" atlatl darts from pine dowels
Просмотров 6 тыс.9 лет назад
In this video I make an atlatl dart from pine dowels from the hardware store. These darts are made from dowels held together with a scarf joint, which I opt to leave un-wrapped. If you desire you could bind it with fishing line or linen cordage or other material. These darts are not takedowns, although they could easily be made that way, by using brass tubing or other such connectors. The techn...
3 piece composite atlatl dart (Takedown)
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.9 лет назад
Here's another 3 piece takedown atlatl dart, this time made from natural materials rather than dowels/plastic. It's similar in concept to the 3 piece takedowns of the archaic Great Basin, but laid out differently. The use of composite sections (Reed/wood) allows quick and easy construction from very small sections of wood and cane.

Wood choices for atlatls, and heat-bending how-to
Просмотров 2,9 тыс.9 лет назад
Answering a question about what woods to use for atlatls (Really, you can use just about any wood!) and how to perform heat-bending on an atlatl. The technique demonstrated is the simplest-using an open heat source. Generally this works well-it does lead to some discoloration of the wood if you let it, but that should sand off easily if you don't totally char it.
Why do atlatls bend upward?
Просмотров 9899 лет назад
A little off-the-cuff discussion video. Lots of archeologic atlatls have an upward curvature. The distal end of the ventral surface is often elevated relative to the proximal end. (The spur end is higher than the handle end). Why? Pretty simple, really, and (spoiler) it's not to make the atlatl work as a spring. Apologies if this info is way too basic for everyone, but it is a question that com...

A medieval type javelin which I have made to come apart into 3 pieces for transport and convenience (Actual medieval javelins were not to my knowledge takeowns, but hey, why not?). Mind you, I'm not a scientist, but a skeptic of them. This said: A 5 lb fiberglass pole can fling a man 3 feet higher than a metal one. When they switched to fiberglass the records were being broken so fast it was ridiculous. It seems there must be alot of power in a 6 lb pole to fling a 170 lb man that much higher. But I have a feeling if you did that experiment with a fiberglass pole vault pole THE SAME THING WOULD HAPPEN. The speed of the atlatl behind the dart and the pole vaulters weight perform the same function, keep energy efficiently directed in ONE direction (up for the vaulter, forward for the atlatl. In your way the energy is directed FROM THE CENTER of gravity in two directions: upward AND downward. If it were springing off the ground efficiently it wouldn't be so noisy. Furthermore, we can see it flexes quite energetically but goes 0 centimeters...doesn't that seem strange to you? I like this effort and maybe you're right. But it seems overly simplistic to me....

    Very interesting. Thanks for sharing! A slow but easy method that was used in Greece in the past was to coppice the willow (or other wood) in the end of winter and keep it tied in bundles so that the tip and bottom of each stick always face on the same direction in the same bundle. Obviously the tip of the stick was never cut to length to clearly tell tip from bottom. Right before spring starts to set in (in South Greece this point in time is marked by the flowering of almond trees) the bundles are untied and each stick is planted in the ground as if to plant it for producing new plants. This was usually done in the south side of walls running roughly east to west for optimum sun exposure. Once the stick start to show signs of life (sap running through the bark) they are pulled out of the soil and debarked by a lengthwise split with a knife followed by hand-peeling.

    These darts don’t appear to be thrown with much force or speed. Would it be reasonable to assume a more skilled thrower might make for a larger threat. Additionally, I’ve got some experience throwing English War Bow arrows and have found that I could get some pretty impressive speed out of them. I surmise that war darts for spear throwers might be more effective with shorter, lighter darts at point blank range like the video shows. Longer darts would obviously be needed for longer range throws. Though that would be difficult to test considering boffer tips are heavy.

    I think this demonstration misses the principles of spring/mass/damper systems and power transfer. Tuning the mass of the atlatl to the individual characteristics of the user and the dart results in proper impedance match and maximum power transfer. In fact these tuning masses are commonly found and still used. The spring effect of the dart is just part of this overall system. The impulse speed (throw) is very important and ideally matches the resonant frequency of the dart and the user’s preferences for an optimum throw. This demonstration misses all that, but does show that common references to spring effect are probably way over simplified.

      Hi Christ, Normally I don’t engage with trolls, but your concern is valid, and for the benefit of others reading these comments, I’ll reply. People can be trained to do any number of amazing physical feats, like deflecting arrows with swords and things of that nature. But people don’t argue that swords were developed for that purpose. These tests weren’t to see if you could train someone up to do this effectively (I’m sure you could), the test is to see if it’s likely that this form would have been dictated by that function, for which other, simpler explanations exist. Without experiments like this, in which we’re confident enough to do things poorly and be publicly judged by people for it, we can’t advance knowledge about technology. Best, -Justin

      Hi Joseph, it depends, I don't just use one. My darts vary in weight in from about 80 grams up to about 170 grams and my atlatls are usually somewhere between 90 and 120 grams, somewhere in that range, and are between 19" long to about 27" long.

    Are you gonna do a shield penetration test with stone points? That could slow the use of the shield a bit when it if full of darts😜

    • @BasketmakerII
      @BasketmakerII 4 года назад

      Lol. Yes of course it would, and they also might poke through into your arm. But darts aren't javelins, they're pretty small diameter. If you had say, 3 Basketmaker darts sticking out of your shield and whacked them with your fist, they would all break across the haft, leaving the point or point tips in the shield. These darts aren't heavy enough to have good armor piercing ability, and stone is brittle. Even if the dart was all wood, it would still only be ~1/2" diameter, easy to break off. I may do something with shield/armor penetration at some point in the future, but all I was interested here was if you can react fast enough to effectively intercept archaeologically derived darts.

    I wonder is surgical tubing would work better? How do you match it to the force a human has? Very interesting idea.

    • @BasketmakerII
      @BasketmakerII 4 года назад

      Hi Ron, I tried rubber as well. I also built a giant slingshot calibrated for adjustable power levels, but there were some disadvantages. The biggest was that the material just doesn't store the energy as efficiently as a steel spring, so the power stroke (and therefore the arm behind the pivot) has to be longer. Using metal springs lets the machine be more compact, and portable, which is important to be able to move it around easily. To match human power with something like this, my approach is to use a spring with greater energy storage than an atlatl throw when stretched the required length and let up tension until the velocity of the darts matches human throws when checked by a radar gun.
